1. Mix the eggs together with the sugar until they increase considerably in volume and light in color.

2. Add the oil, mix well then add the milk, sifted flour and mix until incorporated.

3. Put the carob powder, baking powder and cinnamon in the composition and mix 1-2 minutes well.

4. Grease a pan with oil, take a tablespoon of the composition and put it in the hot pan. When they are baked on one side, we turn them to bake on the other side as well. Remove the mini pancakes on a plate and leave them to cool. We do the same until we finish the composition.

5. Mix the whipped cream with the sugar, first at low speed, then at high speed, until it increases in volume and becomes aerated.

6. Form turrets of 3 pancakes, putting cream on each pancake at the edge, and in the middle one lg of jam. Top with whipped cream and carob powder.

Good appetite!

Fluffy fasting pancakes with CARBOHEAD powder and cinnamon

Carob powder gives these pancakes not only an interesting hue, but also a richer taste. Carob is much richer in antioxidants than cocoa powder, so we have every reason to use it as often as possible.

Lent Pancakes with Roșcove Powder

Fasting pancakes with carob powder & # 8211 recipe

• 2 cups of mineral water
• 150 ml of oil
• 2 tablespoons sugar (preferably brown)
• 2 cups of flour
• 2-3 tablespoons of locust bean powder
• 1 sachet of baking powder
• ½ teaspoon of salt
• grated lemon peel
• ½ teaspoon of cinnamon
• vanilla and rum essence

In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt and carob (carob powder). Gradually add mineral water, stirring constantly with a whisk, to avoid the formation of lumps.

Pour the oil and mix until the composition is homogeneous. If you find it too thick, or too thin, adjust with water or flour. For fasting pancakes, it is recommended to prepare a slightly thicker composition than those with egg. At the end, add the lemon peel, cinnamon and essences.

A secret that you may not have known, is to leave the composition at rest for 1-2 hours, in a cool place. This way, the pancakes will come out much better.

Lent Pancakes with Roșcove Powder

Use a non-stick pan that no longer requires oil for baking pancakes. They are made very quickly, so it is better to light the fire properly, and to sit next to them. As they are dark in color, be careful not to burn them.

Place the pancakes on a flat plate, and cover them with a lid to keep them tender. Grease them with your favorite jam or jam. I go very well with cherry jam, or something sour in general. The pancakes can be rolled, or packed in four, in the form of packages.

Instead of mineral water you can use beer or vegetable milk, and instead of baking powder, baking soda.

Banana muffins and carob powder

Muffin recipes are among the most varied. We can opt for muffins with chocolate or fruit, depending on preference. If you add bananas and carob powder to the recipe, a healthy substitute for cocoa powder, you will get a really delicious and healthy dessert.
This recipe does not contain cocoa, although it tastes and looks as if it had. In addition, as the carob powder is sweet, the amount of sugar added is less.

About carobs

What are carobs

Carob (or carob) is an ornamental tree, but with edible fruits. They grow in the form of pods and are also called the bread of St. John.

Where the locusts grow

Roscov is native to the Mediterranean area (Spain, Italy, Morocco), but can be found as far as Iran, due to the fact that it withstands a wide variety of temperatures. We find it not only in areas with tropical climate, but also in temperate areas, such as our country. It blooms in autumn, and the fruits need a year to fully ripen.

Roscovele in antiquity

Carob trees have been known since ancient times. It seems that Saint John the Baptist survived in the wilderness because of these fruits, which is why they were popularly called "the bread of St. John".

Also in antiquity, carobs, in fact carob seeds (carobs) served as a unit of measurement (carats) to weigh gold, because, absolutely curiously, all carob seeds have exactly the same weight, ie 0.18g. In ancient Rome, the Roman gold coin, the balance, could be checked whether or not it had the correct weight by weighing it with 24 carats (carobs).

About roscov

The scientific name of the carob is Ceratonia siliqua and it is grown mainly as a decorative plant, due to the fact that it is green all the time and the interesting shape of its pods, which need a whole year to ripen. However, the decorative function is not alone, as the consumption of pods and seeds of this tree brings, as we will see immediately, many health benefits.

The appearance and taste of carobs

A non-allergenic food and an important source of vegetable protein, carobs are shaped like green pods, which grow up to 20-25 centimeters and turn brown after harvest. Their taste is sweet, it brings easily with caramel.

In what forms are carobs consumed?

From the carob tree we consume both the pods, fresh, and the seeds from the pods, whole (both suck like candy), but especially the pods in the form of powder, syrup or extract. We also find them on the market under the title of carob /karob, the equivalent of the English word (where, in turn, it comes from Arabic - kharrub meaning there pods).

Roscove powder

The shells and even the carob seeds are ground, thus obtaining carob powder, an extremely healthy food, especially recommended in children's diets, which can be consumed as a cocoa substitute. Carob powder is suitable in many dishes, especially desserts, due to its natural sweet taste, but can also be eaten plain with milk. It has a very low price for its benefits, a bag with 250 grams costing only a few lei. The only concern is that, when you buy carob powder, you do it from a distributor who has stored it in optimal conditions, protected from moisture. Also, the purchased bag must be stored at home in a dry place and protected from the sun, and after opening, put the carob powder in an airtight container, in order to preserve its nutritional qualities.

Carob syrup

Carob syrup is a preparation used to treat conditions such as diarrhea, nausea, bloating, anemia, tachycardia, cough, high cholesterol. It has an antioxidant, antibacterial and polio effect. Also, since it regulates metabolism and stimulates digestion, it is used as an adjunct in weight loss programs. Carob syrup is prepared from carob pods, water and sugar, to which you can also add spices with a flavoring role: cinnamon, cloves, lemon peel. In long-term diets (2-3 months) consume one tablespoon before meals, 3 times a day. It will regulate acidity, speed up metabolism and digestion, will combat the craving for sweets. You can find carob syrup in plafar stores.

Carob extract

Carob extract is a food additive (E410), used in many foods as a stabilizer or thickener and, like most E's, moderate consumption or even avoidance is recommended, even if many experts say that it would not be harmful to the body.

Natural supplements with carobs

On the market we also find a series of natural supplements with carobs, used as a remedy for diarrhea, to combat anemia or cough. You can look for them in plafar type stores. They are recommended especially before the cold season.

Fresh carobs

Fresh carobs have a greenish color and a sweet taste. The carob fruit needs a year to ripen. In Romania you used to find quite a lot of carob trees, but today they are cultivated especially in special plantations.

Dried carobs

Dried carobs turn brown, but keep their sweet taste. After drying, they can be transformed into carob powder and used in a multitude of culinary preparations, without the need for additional added sugar. In fact, drying carob is the most common method of preserving and preserving them (in whole form or powdered).

Roscove vs cocoa vs coffee

It is true that cocoa also has its charm, a special aroma and is part of many dessert recipes, but in all cases carob powder can even it is recomended to take his place. First of all, this replacement is a good idea when it comes to feeding young children. While cocoa powder is not recommended until after the age of 3, as it contains caffeine, carobs can be consumed long before reaching this age. A cup of milk with carob powder has a delicious taste and should not be further sweetened, as carobs contain natural sugars. A cup of cocoa milk must be sweetened, because the natural taste given by cocoa is a bitter one.

Carob powder can be integrated into the diet instead of cocoa and by diabetics or people who follow programs to eliminate extra pounds, as it contains much fewer calories and no fat.

If you want, you can use carob powder to replace classic coffee, especially if you are hypertensive or try not to drink caffeinated beverages for the health of your heart.

Did anyone use carob pods?

Intending to replenish my stock of spices in the kitchen, in the holiday shopping fever I bought a package with carob pods. I remembered that somewhere on the diversification sites, I came across some recipes with locusts. It struck me that they are successfully replacing chocolate.

It's just that, when I got home, I noticed that it was recommended to use it in those recipes carob powder. Can I use these pods without having to pick the seeds to grind?
Has anyone ever used carrots in the form of pods?

Later edit:

Because I found yesterday in the spice drawer, carob pods which I bought last week and about which I told you yesterday that I do not know how to consume or prepare them for my 1 year old daughter, I decided to look for more information. I share them with you in the hope that it will arouse your curiosity to introduce carobs in your diet.

The name of carob it seems to be of Slavonic origin, being found in most Eastern European languages. In English, it is known as carob, this term comes from Arabic kharrub, which means pod.

In antiquity, Arab merchants checked the purity of gold coins (hence the name carat) by counterbalancing with 24 carob grains.

Roșcovul (Ceratonia siliqua) is a tree that grows in the Mediterranean Sea, being highly valued as an ornamental tree. It blooms in September & # 8211 October, with small red flowers, and the fruits, called locusts, are in the form of green pods. They need a year to ripen and reach maturity.

Initially, the pods were used as animal feed, later it was observed that they have many therapeutic properties.
The pods have a pleasant taste, sweet & bitter, and can be eaten as such (after drying and frying) or ground, the resulting powder being a substitute for cocoa, in pastry.

Carob pulp powder has antimicrobial antidiarrheal properties, through the tannins contained. Thus, this astringent action is useful in gastric diseases, such as enterocolitis, dysentery and gastritis.
It is also rich in fiber, unsaturated vegetable fats, iron and carbohydrates, being slightly sweeter than cocoa powder. Compotes, liqueurs or syrup can be made from crushed pods, the latter being used as a sweetener.

Why I like carob powder

The most important aspect, from my point of view, is that this spice successfully replaces cocoa powder (an important aspect for those allergic to chocolate).
Not to mention that the carobs don't contain caffeine and theobromine, compounds with an energizing role that we find in cocoa, coffee and tea leaves.
Important to remember for mothers of babies who have reached the stage of diversification: carbs are good sources of vegetable protein, without allergenic potential, and can be recommended in the diet of children from 7-8 months.

Here is an example of a preparation for the little ones (source):

1/2 cup quinoa (washed in two or three waters, to remove the bitter taste) boil for 15-20 minutes, then mix with 1 teaspoon carob powder and with a few slices of pear, the resulting mixture is placed in a blender.
The cream, the pudding obtained (or whatever you want to call it) is recommended to be consumed warm. Do not leave for the next day!

Carob powder is considered a low-calorie, low-fat, caffeine-free alternative to cocoa and chocolate. One teaspoon contains about 13 kcal and about 17 times less fat than chocolate. Carob powder is thus the ideal substitute for cocoa for those who struggle with extra pounds or consume a lot of sweets. The fiber content of locust bean powder is also important for weight loss, and can be helpful in diets. Even if you ingest a small amount of carob powder, it has the property of increasing its volume in contact with gastric juice, giving the feeling of satiety.

It is possible to find carob powder and in the form of capsules, recommended during weight loss diets, to suppress the feeling of hunger.

Superfoods: Carob Powder & # 8211 Chocolate Mousse

Every day we hear about the qualities of superfoods. But what are they? By definition, they are a source of health, they are nutritious but they also help prevent diseases. We invited our friend Ana Ghica from superalimente.ro to talk to us every Wednesday about this category of food. Our grandparents used to give us fish oil. In the next section, with Ana's help, we will complete the list weekly.

Chocolate mousse

Only when we hear "chocolate" are we conditioned to recall all the moments when we pampered ourselves with the food of the gods - yes, yes, in the Amazonian tradition chocolate has been revered for over 4,000 years! I know of no food more famous than cocoa for its association with love, reward, pampering, but also with guilt!

Today, however, I propose a chocolate cream that is not only healthy and without risks for the figure, but can also be an excellent meal or dessert for our children.

Ingredient:

  • 1 well baked avocado
  • 2-3 teaspoons carob powder
  • 1 tablespoon country honey or, for children under 1 year, 4 teaspoons raw agave syrup

Method of preparation:

Peel an avocado and cut it into pieces, then combine in a tall bowl with the carob powder and the sweetener you have chosen. With the help of a vertical blender, the 3 ingredients are transformed into a creamy and fine paste, with a rich and refined taste.

Usually, we take avocado quite raw from the store, so leave it for 3-4 days at room temperature to bake well. It is a fruit rich in healthy fats, full of minerals and vitamins and which soon enters the dietary diversification schemes of our babies.

Carob powder, an extremely valuable food since antiquity, is an excellent substitute for cocoa powder - it has a lot of antioxidants, is alkaline (so does not induce acidity in the body), fights various pathogenic intestinal bacteria and is very rich in calcium . Moreover, it gives an excellent taste of chocolate to the desserts in which we use it, with zero agitation effects in the little ones.

Agave syrup has a delicious taste, is a natural product and with a much lower degree of refinement than sugar, be it white or brown.

In a bowl, crush the biscuits by hand (or if it is more convenient, grind them in a food processor), add the melted butter and a spoonful of honey. Mix well, put the composition in a form with a detachable ring and press it with a glass, then let it cool while we prepare the cream.

First we put the gelatin to hydrate in cold water for 10 minutes. Mix the ricotta well with the condensed milk, then add the whipped cream mixed with 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar. Drain the gelatin and melt it over low heat carefully (not to boil) or in the microwave with 2-3 tablespoons of water, then add it to the cream. Pour the composition obtained over the base and put the form back in the cold.

We also prepare the topping: in a saucepan mix the carob flour, the starch, the powdered sugar and incorporate the cold milk. Put it on low heat and boil until the composition thickens. Let it cool and then put it on top of the cream.

After it has been cold for a few hours (preferably 3-4) we can serve it and serve it. I have no words to describe how delicious it was, good appetite!

Homemade chocolate with carob powder

Which child doesn't like chocolate? Or which adult? In general, chocolate is the most beloved dessert. Although it is true that not all people are fans of chocolate. Only the vast majority of them. With us, everyone in the house is all big chocolate lovers.

We often buy, I admit. Especially dark chocolate. It's my favorite. I consume it as such but I also use it most of the time for desserts that have chocolate as an ingredient. But we also make it at home, from powdered milk, as an independent dessert.

It is known that chocolate contains cocoa and that it is not indicated for children or even adults, in various ailments or treatments, such as a homeopathic treatment.

Cocoa contains, among other things, caffeine. It is, in other words, exciting of the nervous system and hence the ban on its consumption in various situations.

Carob powder, also known as carob but it's not like cocoa. That is why it is recommended to replace cocoa in various preparations for people who are forbidden to consume cocoa.

In addition, carob powder, which is obtained by grinding whole carob pods, has the ability to regulate blood glucose levels, being a natural sweetener with a low glycemic index. It contains carbohydrates, but also valuable dietary fiber in high percentage.

Its consumption inhibits the development of pathogenic intestinal bacteria, especially E.coli and, through the content of tannin, pectin and gallic acid, restores normal peristalsis.

So here are just a few reasons why you can replace cocoa with carob powder when cooking. Obviously, provided you like its taste as well. Carob powder has a different taste to cocoa, a different flavor. But, in my opinion, it is perfect in homemade chocolate, it has a special taste.
