Our contributor takes a 'staycation' to explore St. Louis

The Moonrise Hotel is located on St. Louis's Delmar Loop.

Every so often I feel the need to take a mini-vacation. Nothing drastic, no real big travel plans, just a night or two to escape my current work/stress/blog/social life and relax. Maddie and I were lucky enough to take one of these mini-vacay’s here in St. Louis, courtesy of the Moonrise Hotel. Aptly named our "staycation," Mads and I took the opportunity to explore both the nightlife and daytime fun of the Delmar Loop.

The rooftop terrace has a stunning view of the St. Louis skyline and most importantly, a full service bar. Perfect for pre-dinner and after-dinner cocktails… which we may or may not have indulged in… it was staycation, it’s allowed. We popped across the street for a quick dinner at Pi — the pizza is absolutely fantastic and the service was as good as it gets thanks to one Mr. J. Potts!

Did I mention the Moonrise has the most comfortable beds on the planet? I got some seriously good sleep that night. Which was needed for the shopping expenditures that happened on Saturday. A delicious breakfast at Eclipse, a walk around the Loop, a little star gazing, a lot of coffee, and some money well spent at the boutique shops made for the ideal ending to our Loop "staycation." As far as shopping is concerned, one of my all-time favorite shops in St. Louis (and in the Loop) is Phoenix Rising, which I featured here last year. I also picked up some great things from Avalon Exchange, Zeizo, and Pitaya.

Big thanks to the staff of the Moonrise Hotel and Eclipse Restaurant for taking proper care of us while we were there. Next time you’re finding yourself in need of a mini-vacay, book a stay at the Moonrise — even if it’s just to lay in those beds all day! And, if you’ve got a favorite way to spend a staycation, I’d love to hear about it — leave a comment!

Bring comfy shoes, an appetite, and your curiosity, as all are tested and satisfied as we bring you a unique view of Saint Louis’ most colorful neighborhood.

The Delmar Loop, originally named after the “loop” that the streetcars took to bring people to the area, was named one of the 10 Great Streets in America. It is a vibrant entertainment, restaurant, and shopping district in University City. Washington University, located nearby, has a heavy influence here many of the students live, eat, and socialize on the Delmar Loop. The neighborhood offers some of the city’s most popular culinary hot spots.

Funky, Fresh, and Fun Stops

The restaurants we’ve selected for you (subject to change on occasion) range from one of the hippest taco joints in the city to an old-world bakery that serves up traditional Italian pastries. We highlight a newer neighborhood staple that serves Texas-style BBQ straight from the smoker and a Middle Eastern gem that specializes in family recipes made with the freshest ingredients. We also check out the original location of the most-acclaimed pizza joint to call Saint Louis home in years.

Whether you’re a visitor or local, this delicious food tour has something for everyone!

What You Experience:

  • Eat your way through the Saint Louis Walk of Fame.
  • Learn about the neighborhood’s history — from trolleys to Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Possible Stops (subject to change):

  • Texas-style BBQ in the heart of Delmar Loop

CDC announces fully vaccinated people can largely ditch masks indoors

St. Louis area hospitals begin vaccinating those ages 12 to 15

The new CDC guidance announced Thursday allows fully vaccinated Americans to stop wearing masks indoors in most settings. The new rules will help clear the way for reopening workplaces, schools, and other venues. It also removes the need for social distancing for those who are fully vaccinated.

If you are not vaccinated then experts recommend that you still wear a mask indoors and in crowded outdoor areas. People who have not been vaccinated should also continue to practice social distancing.

All restrictions meant to slow the spread of the coronavirus are being rescinded in Kansas City, Missouri, following guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt filed the lawsuit this week saying the restrictions put in place by the St. Louis County Department of Public Health were “arbitrary, capricious, and unreasonable.”

“Just three days after I filed suit, St. Louis County has lifted their restrictions. Citizens of St. Louis County will no longer be subjected to the one-man COVID rule of County Executive Sam Page. This is a great victory for the people of St. Louis County. I will continue to fight to ensure that Missourians’ rights and freedoms are protected,” writes Attorney General Eric Schmitt.

Page responded by saying St. Louis County officials will continue to make all decisions based on science, research and recommendations from the CDC.

The CDC and the Biden administration have faced pressure to ease restrictions on fully vaccinated people — those who are two weeks past their last required COVID-19 vaccine dose — in part to highlight the benefits of getting the shots.

The country’s aggressive vaccination campaign has paid off: U.S. virus cases are at their lowest rate since September, deaths are at their lowest point since last April and the test positivity rate is at the lowest point since the pandemic began.

Delmar Loop in St. Louis - Recipes

By Lauren Healey // April 20, 2021

With medical marijuana finally readily available in Missouri, and recreational going strong in Illinois, there are more reasons than ever to celebrate 4/20. Here’s how you can stay festive this year.

First, if you’re a Missouri resident and don’t already have a medical marijuana card, check out this website from Swade Dispensary to walk you through the process. Then, stay in full control of your buzz with this guide to microdosing. Multiple locations, swadecannabis.com

St. Louis: A Global Food Village

People who eat out tend to favor Italian, Chinese or Mexican restaurants. But there are so many other cuisines, brimming with favor, yet to be explored right here in St. Louis—Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Korean, Greek, Balkan, Iranian, German, Japanese, Afghan, Filipino, Korean, Indian, French, Moroccan, Irish, Israeli, South America and more).

New Tastes and Old

As a teenager, having eaten Southern fare all my life, I was intrigued by my first Chinese cuisine. The Sampan Chinese restaurant located on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC was one of the first Asian restaurants to appear in the Capital City after the war.

On a Sunday evening, my mother would occasionally get a carryout of Chow Mein, Chop Suey, or Egg Foo Yung, that came in a white carton with a wire-bale handle. (In a day before microwaves, there was no worry that you might rewarm food packaged with a metal attachment.)

The soy sauce that accompanied the order was a new condiment for my family and came in a small paper cup before the day of plastic packets. The Chinese dishes were a great taste treat and the beginning of more ethnic foods that Americans would take to in the years ahead.

A Thai Treat

I thought about my early Chow Mein dinners when my grandson showed up at my condo recently with an array of white cartons, (no wire bales), that he had gotten at Fork&Stix in the Delmar Loop. We enjoyed such delicacies as Crispy Spring Rolls Chicken Khao Soi (a Northern Thai curry-noodle soup) Muu Ping (grill pork skewers) Sticky Rice and Som Tum (spicy, green papaya salad with tomatoes, green beans, Thai chili, and lime juice). And a bowl of Chicken Pad Thai.

Beyond Chinese, Italian, and Mexican Cuisine

There was nothing overly spicy or weird about any of these dishes, so it makes them suitable for people wanting to explore new foods and flavors. If you’ve not tried Thai, or some of the other international dishes available in St. Louis, and want to reach out beyond Italian, Chinese and Mexican, here’s a list of restaurants from which to begin your exploration.

Ask your server about the restaurant’s favorite dishes and give them a try. Or order several items and share. Either way, your’re in for a treat at any of these tried and true restaurants. This is not an exhaustive list, but a good beginning.

Kimchi Guys plans to debut a new location this June at 282 N. Skinker Blvd., as reported by St. Louis Magazine. Owner Munsok So (who also owns Drunken Fish and event space 612North) opened the restaurant’s first location on Laclede’s Landing in February 2019 and quickly received feedback from customers requesting a location further west.

“We would get a lot of customers coming from West County, North County, even [Midtown], wanting a closer location,” So said. He expressed optimism that the high foot traffic near the Loop and density from students and visitors to nearby Forest Park will also help the restaurant attract new customers.

The new location will have the same concept as the first: fast-casual dining with the goal of introducing Korean fried chicken to more people in St Louis.“I think Korean flavors in general are getting more popular here in the United States,” So said, and he wants to offer that to the St Louis community.

The menu for the restaurant’s new location will remain the same as well. Customers will find the popular twice-fried Korean fried chicken offered with four unique sauces, bibimbap and kimchi fried rice bowls, and Korean-Mexican fusion items like tacos, quesadillas and nachos. “We’re still experimenting with some newer options, being closer to (Washington) University, with a larger international population,” So said of the new menu.

The 1,700-square-foot space will have a modern, casual vibe with some green accents. There will also be a walk-up window where customers can order and pick up their food without going inside. “We want a real easy feel, look and functionality, (with customers) able to order through kiosks, pick up deliveries through the window, and order curbside as well,” So said.

So has big goals for the future. “I would love to have Korean fried chicken all over the place – I think it’s a really unique style of fried chicken,” he said. Construction of the new space, as well as hiring and training the new team, will begin soon.

    OUR STORY

Years ago, on a visit to Chicago, my wife nixed my deep dish for dinner suggestion and introduced me to my first bowl of ramen instead. There’s an old saying in Japan that goes something like, “don’t expect to necessarily be aware of your own enlightenment,” but I was fully aware. I’d been inspired, and from that inspiration, Nudo was born.

Nudo is the celebration of how powerful food can be, and it’s fueled by my gratitude for its ability to make anyone feel at home anywhere. I first arrived in St. Louis many moons ago as a refugee from Vietnam, the city’s warm welcome, and support led first to the creation of Mai Lee, and now to the creation of Nudo. I wanted to bring St. Louis a unique ramen experience that would reflect its very own diversity.

At Nudo, you’ll find rich ramen alongside aromatic pho, on a menu that’s been years in the making. You’ll find ramen that one of Japan’s foremost ramen chefs had a hand in crafting. And, most importantly, we hope you’ll find yourself feeling right at home.
